Experience the central Colorado wilderness in all of its natural beauty, complexity and wonder.

Learn about winter and nature in the Colorado mountains

For the adventurer with an interest in nature there exists spectacular opportunity. Few places provide so many different natural communities so close to one another. Geology, climate, plants and animals work together to create this unique landscape. With snow boots, spikes and/or snowshoes, we journey up and down National Forest trails to discover the stories behind the many species of life that live here.

In the snow season, we lead small groups to experience the winter ecology of these Rocky Mountains, learning about how life above the snowpack responds to the winters as well as life below the snowpack. We are sure to see signs of those species, such plant adaptations and the tracks of winter active animals.  You will need outdoor winter clothing and footwear. (see List of things to bring winter ). To get started, send us a list of dates you are interested in (click “Join Us For A Hike” above), and we will let you know what is available. Once a date is confirmed, we will send you a questionnaire and release form to complete, which then secures your place on the calendar. Once a trail is selected for you, we will inform you and provide a time and place to meet.

Summit Nature Hikes is a not-for-profit venture. There are no fees associated with these guided hikes. Our aim is to nurture appreciation and support for nature and our National Forests. Also, being a nonprofit allows us to explore much more of the National Forest Wilderness Areas than if we were commercial.
